Diabetic Snacks
Choosing the right diabetic snacks is not as easy as it may first seem. However there are some basic rules of thumb that may help you in your quest. Being careful with the calorie count and limiting the size of snacks properly.
If you can keep your calorie count down to about one hundred and fifty calories per snack, you should in general remain safe. That said, some fat free or low fat snacks are not similarly low in sugar, so you have to remain vigilant and remember to read the labels. You’ll find some snacks that have just a little less fat and sugar than a similar regular snack, these are the diabetic snacks you want to go for.
How about trying a handful of nuts to give a protein boost, or maybe whole grain crackers with a scrape of peanut butter. Raw vegetables remain a favourite choice, or you can have fruits as well. If you freeze some grapes or pieces of banana, they can be enjoyed as a cool snack in the summertime – or anytime you fancy. Even a fudge Popsicle has only around eighty calories.
If you are a likeer of cheese for example, then low-fat cheeses make really good diabetic snacks, like string cheese or cottage cheese. And you can find other low-fat cheeses that are tasty, satisfying and pretty much ok for the diabetic. However you should remember to always read labels to be sure about fat levels.
You won’t go far wrong if you choose natural foods such as nuts and vegetables. This is, in most cases, always a better snack for most people, and not just diabetics. Not only are they free of extra sugars and preservatives, but you’ll find that they are really good for helping with weight loss; often a necessary problem for diabetics. Energy is another plus gained from eating natural foods.
Probably the most difficult but most important point to watch out for when we’re talking about diabetic snacks is portion size. If you like to snack, and more especially when snacking on something you know is probably not so great for you, remember to keep all portions small. It’s also very important that you are conservative in how often you snack on a daily basis. Too much of anything is not usually the best idea for anyone, far less a diabetic.
